“Disrespect invites disrespect.”
These were the words of Meryl Streep during her speech at the 2017 Golden Globes awards and ironically enough, she began the speech by saying “I lost my mind earlier this year so I’ll have to read this” and went on talking about Trump and how football and MMA were ‘not art.’
She tried to slam Trump first for making fun of a NY Times reporter (which doesn’t surprise us anymore as Trump slams are coming in from left and right these days), to which he responded via tweets (because Trump). First of all, there is the Trump bit:
After that, she went on saying that “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
And athletes as well as the MMA world is delivering some sweet justice in their comebacks.
To understand the ‘why‘ of the offense that martial artists have been taking all over the world, you’ll probably have to understand the ‘how‘ of her taking this subtle (or not so subtle) jab. Here is the speech:
Now while this might have come off sounding disrespecting, there is no way of knowing if it was a definitive and intentional jab at MMA or if it was just something that came out of her mouth in the flow of speech. But this is what you get when you say something like that in an audience of millions when you have a responsibility not to mess up representing something. You start to get smashed, because people and social media and well, you know…
And here is Dana white‘s reply:
The responses are getting more and more bizarre and they will be rolling in for weeks now. When you’re famous, it’s probably a bad idea to keep your ‘uneducated opinions’ to yourself (something similar to what Dana White said in his response).
As a bonus, here is a ‘laymen’s response’ to all of this. And it is, indeed, relatable :
Hey! Look. We’re not pro/against Trump, or MMA or Meryl Streep or Football. But what we are against is, drama and stupidity, if you will.
And what we’re all for, is, well, awesomeness. I mean, come on. Look at Messi and McGregor. Would you not call this art?
